I love the teachers at Hailey’s preschool, she goes back to school next week, and I am planning on making a little gift for her new teacher. I’m hoping to share that with you all later this week. What gifts will you be sending to your child’s/children’s teacher(s) over the next few days?

Do you get an A+ in your back to school prep? It’s almost here, the exciting, sometimes overwhelming, first day of school….are you and your kiddos ready? A+ Back to School Shopping List Joyfully Sharing The Joyful Princess Boutique

Over the weekend we went to do a little shopping and things were in high gear when it comes to back to school shopping. In Florida it was tax free weekend, so a lot of parents were going to the large retail stores, back to school shopping list in hand. We have two weeks left before the children in our area go back to school, and I thought I would share some great handmade back to school items sure to make your children smile on their first day of school.

For those who don’t know, I am an animal lover, and we have quite the house full of pets. We have two dogs, a cat, a bird, a gerbil, and a salt water fish tank full of scaled friends. I thought I’d share a couple of pictures of our “furbabies” with you!

We also have some wild critters that have called our house home, staking claim to our front and backyards. A cute baby rabbit, a family of squirrels, a pair of Cardinals, and our most recent “addition”, a pair of Blue Jays. Many think I’m a Dr. Doolittle of sorts because animals of all kinds seem to find their way to me. It is a joy for all of us to have these animals in our lives, and when I went to browse Etsy , I thought I would see what I could find for the dogs and cats out there. Here are some of the marvelous handmade items I found for pets on Etsy  ~

If you are anything like me, you shop for your kids before you shop for yourselves, and my pets are my “kids” too! I find myself spotting things for them all of the time, hands down, they are spoiled! What sort of pets do you have? Can you resist shopping for them, or are you like me, always on the look out for something cute for your pets?

"Cottage Chic" or "Cottage Style" decor has taken the world by storm lately, and I have absolutely fallen in love with it!

I am a girl with dreams, some larger than others, and one of those larger than life dreams is to have my own brick and mortar boutique shop someday. I am starting to visualize that dream shop and what it would look like and I know that I want it to have a comfortable, warm, inviting, and relaxed feeling to it without all of the metal display racks and shelves we see in department stores. It seemed natural to want to go the “Cottage Chic” route, so I have been using Pinterest and Etsy to gather my favorite decor items to inspire me to continue to work towards making my dream a reality. On my inspirational search I came across the "Paint Me White" Blog, a treasure trove of upcycled furniture items, many of which have the “Cottage Chic” feel to them. I fell in love with so many of the items featured on the blog, but this Armoire is one of my favorite pieces.

  Paint Me White Armoire

I can just envision the handmade trinkets I could display on the shelves, and the small drawers could hold extra stocked items. After Pinterest I turned to Etsy to browse for additional inspirational decor and came across this lovely Plate Rack by Vintagewhitecottage.

With a touch of pink another lovely shelving idea comes to mind! Although the shelves are not very wide they would be the perfect size for children’s clothing items, neatly folded and stacked. Or perhaps handmade children’s toys? I think that a children’s boutique should be colorful too, so I went on the search for a colorful item to add to the dream decor. I stumbled on this beautiful Tiered Table by honeystreasures on Etsy.

And what boutique would be complete without a mirror? I found this lovely Floral Wall Mirror by retrosideshow on Etsy. I love the cream color of the mirror and the floral detail would make it a whimsical addition to my dream shop!

My journey to find “Cottage Chic” decor items inspired me to focus harder on my long term goals and on making my dream a reality. What inspires you? What visions do you have for your future? Do you use “Cottage Chic” or “Cottage Decor” in your home, craft space, or office? I would love to hear about it! Until then, get inspired to start visualizing your dreams and make them a reality!

It’s Inspirational Saturday, and I asked myself “What Makes a Mom?” Tomorrow is Mother’s Day, and I have found myself sharing Mother’s Day related goodies here and there over the past couple weeks, but the truth is there are many different ways to be a “mom”.   Of course, there are moms with little girls…

The Joyful Princess Boutique Joyfully Sharing Blog Inspirational Saturday What makes a Mom

…and moms with little boys…

The Joyful Princess Boutique Joyfully Sharing Blog Inspirational Saturday What makes a Mom

But what really makes a “mom” is the unconditional love, bond, and caregiving that women have for others. I like to say that we have a “furamily”. Our “furry, four-legged children” are a huge part of our family, and I am their “mom” just as much as I am a mom to Hailey. So on Mother’s Day don’t forget the moms with dogs…

Take the time to celebrate Mother’s Day for all, for those who are blessed with children, for those who are blessed with beloved animals, and for those mothers who have left us to be with the Angels. Be inspired to answer the question “What makes a Mom?” Your answer may surprise you!

Hailey recently celebrated her 3rd Birthday and one of her gifts was a really fun set of “Fancy Nancy” knee-high socks. She loved them, but she wasn’t too fond of the sock portion on the feet because she wasn’t able to run without slipping and sliding around, and she LOVES to run. So I thought it would be a great idea to turn the knee-high socks into a fun pair of leggings. This is an easy sewing project that any beginner can handle and tackle in about 15 minutes or less!

Knee High Socks to Leggings DIY Tutorial The Joyful Princess Boutique

For this project you will need:

  • Pair of knee-high socks (they can be child size or adult size and in just about any theme, color, or design you wish)
  • Measuring tape
  • Sewing machine
  • Coordinating thread
  • Stick pins

One of the reasons this project is so easy is that the knee-high socks are made from knitted fabrics, and those fabrics will not fray when cut.

You will want to first measure your child’s leg to determine the desired length for your leggings. You may want to make them longer for colder weather, or perhaps so that they go just over the knee for babies that are crawling around. In my case I was taking a child sized pair of knee highs and converting them to leggings for my 3-year-old daughter who wanted them to cover the area between her knee and ankle.

After determining the length for your leggings, add 1/2 inch to that measurement. This will be to account for your hem allowance. You will want to trim off the foot portion, just above the heel of the sock, or higher depending on the chosen length. (If you use a child sized pair of knee highs, like I did, you will most likely be trimming just above the heel to achieve your desired length.) Your knee-high socks should look something like this after trimming off the excess.

Trimmed Knee High Socks

After you have done this to both socks you are ready to sew the hems. I stitched mine with a straight stitch placed half-way between the seam allowance, about 1/4″ from the folded edge. Remember not to stretch the fabric as you sew!

Pinned with Hem Allowance

Remove the pins as you go along, and to make sure that you back-stitch when you start and finish the hem as well.

Sewing Hem

Trim off the excess thread and turn your knee-high socks, now leggings, right-side out. Look how easy that was!

Finished Leggings

If you are looking for a more challenging project or if you are going to be using the leggings with a baby you could add elastic to the top portion of the knee-high sock to prevent it from slipping down by creating a casing along the top for a piece of 1/4″ wide elastic. If you had an adult sized pair of leggings you could leave them longer, rather than trimming off the excess within 1/2″ of the desired length, fold the excess into the hem area, and hem them. As your child grows you can remove the sewn in hem, fold down some of the excess fabric to lengthen the leggings, and sew in a new hem. Knitted fabrics are fairly forgiving when it comes to removing hems and such.

Now it’s your turn to try it, the next time you spot a cute pair of knee-high socks grab them!
